A document exists (Par 8. Arundel 36/1) dated 17 May 1798 which is an order of the Justice of the Peace to pay Mary Murrell of Arundel four shillings and sixpence per week. Philip Murrell is described as a private serving in the Sussex Supplementary Regiment of Militia in his own right as a ballotted man for the parish of Arundel. The document lists his children as Philip aged 5 years and George aged 3 years. The sum of four shillings and sixpence is described as being the usual and ordinary price of three days labour in husbandry within the said county.
