It is reported that when their son James Middleton was age 7 years that he fell off the back of a horse and cart, knocked his head, and became deaf and dumb. He was put into a home for the deaf and dumb which the 1871 census reveals was in Margate, Kent. He always resented being left in the school and that the family did not have much to do with him. Could his accident have had some effect on his mother, as she died only a year later in 1865?
